Hi, my name is Ellie. My birthday is on Valentine’s Day. I get lots of chocolate. People get really sad because they’re single. I’m like, I’m having a party!
I really like how confident I am in myself. I’m almost surprised by it sometimes. It’s good to be like sure of who I am and sometimes that’s intimidating to people. I think not pretending to be someone else gives me confidence. I like being who I am and being proud of it.
When I was coming to college, I had lots of things I was considering to do. I was like I need to pick something where I know I could make a career, or something I know I’m good at. So I was like I’m good at special education. In the back of my mind, I knew I wanted to do something cooler. I kind of wanted to be a missionary. I was always like you can’t do that. That’s for other people. That’s too hard. Last term I switched my major and it was one of the best feelings of my life. I was like, you know what I can do this! I want to go to places where language is spoken but not written down and create a written language around those spoken languages. It’s a big goal, and it’s still intimidating, but I think I can do it.
One of my favorite quotes one of my teachers told me when I graduated eighth grade was, “Ellie, remember to keep your head up and your shoes tied.” Keep your head up and be confident and be proud of who you are, but keep your shoes tied and make sure you’re prepared.
